Students can help raise awareness about sun safety and win prizes by entering the 2010 SunWise with SHADE poster contest.

The annual contest is a joint effort by the SHADE Foundation of America, WeatherBug Schools, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Control Program to teach children ways to protect their skin and eyes from excessive sun exposure.

Most people are not aware that skin cancer, while largely preventable, is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than one million cases reported in 2005. By following a number of simple steps, you can still enjoy your time in the sun while protecting yourself from overexposure. The SunWise Action Steps taught to prevent too much sun exposure:

  • Seek Shade
  • Wear a Hat
  • Wear Sunglasses
  • Check the UV Index
  • Do Not Suntan or Use Tanning Beds
  • Use Sunscreen of SPF 15+
  • Cover Up
  • Limit the Sun Between 10:00 a.m. and  4:00 p.m.

Students in grades K - 8 are encouraged to submit a poster. Posters must be postmarked by March 24th.  For more information, click here.

Share Your Organization's Success
A great way to get connected with the WI CCC plan is by sharing your organization's cancer related projects, activities, and successes.

The WI CCC has started a Statewide Inventory Catalogue of these projects, activities, and successes. Organizations such as the UW Center for Tobacco Research and Invention and the Wisconsin Women's Health Foundation have already contributed.

If you have a project you want to contribute to this catalogue, simply complete the Statewide Program Inventory form and then check back to the website periodically to see it posted.

For more information or other ways to contribute to the Statewide Inventory email us at wicancer@uwccc.wisc.edu.

Improving Hmong Cancer Reporting
The Wisconsin Cancer Reporting System (WCRS) in collaboration with the Wisconsin United Coalition of Mutual Assistance Associations (WUCMAA), the largest state-wide Hmong organization, and the Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (WCCCP) conducted a survey in the summer of 2008 to learn about health care facilities experience and current practices in reporting Hmong cancer cases to WCRS. The survey also resulted in the creation of a pamphlet to help educate Hmong about race self-identification when being admitted to facilities for health care.  The pamphlets will be distributed at the 12 regional WUCMAA offices, and is available here.
